SOC reports are the attestation US-market clients ask Philippine service providers for — independent CPA-issued reports on your controls. When a client says “send us your SOC”, they almost always mean SOC 2 Type II: controls relevant to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy, tested for operating effectiveness over a period.
SOC 1 vs SOC 2 vs SOC 3 — which do clients mean?
SOC 1 covers controls relevant to clients’ financial reporting — payroll processors, F&A BPOs and claims processors get asked for it by their clients’ auditors. SOC 2 covers the Trust Services Criteria and is the default demand on IT, SaaS-support, healthcare-information and CX operations. SOC 3 is a public, summary version of SOC 2 for marketing use. Type I reports on control design at a point in time; Type II tests operation over 3–12 months — and is what serious clients accept.
What Philippine BPOs should know
A SOC 2 engagement is an attestation by a licensed CPA firm, not a certification we or any consultant can issue — anyone offering a “SOC 2 certificate” misunderstands the product. The consulting value sits before the audit: defining system boundaries and Trust Services scope, building and operating the controls, gathering evidence for the observation window, and running a readiness assessment so the CPA firm’s fieldwork lands on a prepared organization instead of a scramble.
SOC 2 and ISO 27001 together
The overlap is large and deliberate: one control environment can feed both. ISO 27001’s certificate travels globally and structures the ISMS; SOC 2 Type II satisfies US-style vendor due-diligence with tested-over-time evidence. Data-heavy Philippine providers increasingly maintain both — built once, evidenced twice. Start from ISO 27001 if you have neither; add SOC 2 when US clients demand attestation.
The readiness path
Scope and Trust Services selection → gap assessment → remediation and control operation (start the evidence clock) → readiness review → CPA firm engagement for Type I, then Type II over your observation window. Realistic first-Type II timeline: six to nine months including the observation period.
Why Sterling International Consulting for SOC readiness?
Because the attestation belongs to a CPA firm — the readiness belongs to you, and that is where engagements are won or wasted. We prepare Philippine service providers for SOC 1 and SOC 2 examinations the way auditors will actually test them: system boundaries defined, Trust Services scope matched to client demands, controls operating with evidence accumulating through the observation window. When the CPA firm arrives, fieldwork lands on an organized company.
What makes us different
No “SOC certificates” sold here — anyone offering one misunderstands the product. What we deliver is the unglamorous machinery of a clean Type II: control design that fits your operation, evidence discipline your teams sustain, readiness assessment before the real one, and ISO 27001 alignment so one control set serves both credential paths your clients ask for.

The Philippine market context
The Philippine market context for ISO 27001 explains the demand better than any standards brochure. BPO client security reviews treat the certificate as table stakes; banks and fintechs cascade it to vendors; the NPC’s Data Privacy Act enforcement makes demonstrable security measures a legal comfort as well as a commercial one. Manila‘s outsourcing corridor may be the world’s densest concentration of companies asked for ISO 27001 by clients abroad. Certification converts that pressure into a one-line answer: an accredited certificate that procurement teams verify in thirty seconds instead of auditing you for days. The companies moving first are not the largest — they are the ones closest to demanding customers, and their certificates are already appearing in bids as differentiators the rest of the market will soon treat as entry tickets.
Where to go from here
If ISO certification in the Philippines touches your business this year, the efficient path is conversation before commitment: bring us the client questionnaire, tender clause or compliance letter that raised the question, and we will map it to what your organization actually needs — which is sometimes less than you fear and occasionally more than you hoped, but always specific once assessed. The revision tracker keeps every deadline current, the news page catches developments weekly, and a gap assessment turns any of it into a dated plan. No pressure mechanics, no template quotes — evidence first, always.

SOC 2 case study in the Philippines: SOC 2 Type 2 for a global ITES/BPO provider
The client. A large ITES/BPO provider handling customer support, data processing and back-office services for healthcare, finance and e-commerce clients — sensitive data at global scale.
The challenge. High-profile prospects would not outsource without independently verified controls; ad-hoc security questionnaires were consuming resources; and existing measures lacked a structured, auditable system for access control, incident response and vendor risk.
What Sterling did. We assessed their environment against the SOC 2 Trust Services Criteria (security, availability, confidentiality), designed and implemented the missing controls — access management, encryption, network security, incident response, vendor risk assessment — documented SOC 2 aligned policies and procedures, and trained staff ahead of the Type 2 audit window.
The outcome. A clean SOC 2 Type 2 report: security practices verified over time, sales cycles shortened, and enterprise clients’ vendor-risk teams satisfied.
“SOC 2 was more than a badge. With Sterling, we overhauled our security operations. Now, clients trust us with their most sensitive data thereby fuelling our growth.”

SOC reports — frequently asked questions
Can you issue our SOC 2 report?
No one but a licensed CPA firm can — and that independence is the point. We make you audit-ready: scoping, controls, evidence discipline and readiness assessment, then support you through the attestation.
SOC 2 Type I or Type II first?
Type I proves design quickly and satisfies some clients temporarily; Type II is the real ask. A common path: Type I to unblock a deal, straight into the Type II observation window.
How long must controls run before a Type II report?
Most first reports cover a 3–6 month observation period, extending to 12 months in later cycles. Controls must operate and generate evidence throughout — backdating is not a thing.
Do we need SOC 2 if we have ISO 27001?
Depends on your clients. Global and EU-leaning clients accept ISO 27001 readily; US enterprises often contractually require SOC 2 Type II regardless. The efficient answer is one control set serving both.
