ISO 27018 Certification in the Philippines — PII Protection in Public Cloud

Home ISO 27018 Certification in the Philippines — PII Protection in Public Cloud

ISO/IEC 27018:2019 is the code of practice for protecting personally identifiable information (PII) in public clouds, written for organizations that process PII on behalf of their customers. For Philippine BPOs and SaaS companies whose business is exactly that — handling other people’s customer data in cloud environments — it is the most direct answer to the privacy section of a vendor-risk questionnaire. Like ISO 27017, it is implemented and certified as an extension of an ISO 27001 ISMS, not as a standalone certificate.

What ISO 27018 requires of a PII processor

The standard extends ISO 27001’s controls with PII-specific obligations for public-cloud processors: process PII only on documented customer instructions; support the customer in honoring data-subject requests; disclose the use of subcontractors and the locations where PII may be stored; notify customers of unauthorized disclosures, and of legally binding requests for PII where the law allows; return, transfer or securely dispose of PII when the engagement ends; and put confidentiality commitments and staff training behind all of it. In short, it converts privacy promises that usually live in contracts into auditable controls.

The Data Privacy Act connection

Philippine processors already carry legal duties under the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (RA 10173): implement reasonable and appropriate organizational, physical and technical security measures, support the rights of data subjects, and answer to the National Privacy Commission. ISO 27018 does not replace any of that — no private standard substitutes for legal compliance — but it gives a Philippine processor something the law alone does not: independently audited evidence that cloud PII controls exist and operate. For an offshore client weighing a Philippine vendor, that evidence reads faster than a legal memo.

Who should implement it

Three profiles, typically. BPOs and contact centers processing customer PII for US, European or Australian principals — names, accounts, health and financial details — inside cloud CRMs and telephony platforms. SaaS and platform companies hosting user data on hyperscale infrastructure. And healthcare or insurance support providers, where PII overlaps with US obligations around protected health information — see our HIPAA compliance guide for that layer. If clients send GDPR-style processor addendums, ISO 27018 is the control set that lets your answers survive an audit.

Certification mechanics: an ISO 27001 scope extension

There is no standalone accredited ISO 27018 certificate. The route mirrors ISO 27017: the PII controls extend your risk assessment and Statement of Applicability, your certification body audits them within the ISO 27001 audit — initial, surveillance or scope extension — and the resulting ISO 27001 certificate references ISO 27018. Already certified to ISO 27001? Adding 27018 is a focused project measured in weeks. Starting fresh? Implement ISO 27001 with the 27018 controls designed in from day one; the combined project costs far less than two sequential ones.

Pair it with ISO 27701 for full privacy management

ISO 27018 secures PII in one environment: the public cloud, in the processor role. ISO 27701 builds the full privacy information management system above it — controller and processor roles, privacy risk assessment, data-subject rights handling, lawful-basis mapping. BPOs facing GDPR-exposed clients increasingly implement 27001 + 27018 + 27701 as one architecture. US-market clients may still ask for a SOC 2 report with the privacy criterion; the control work overlaps heavily, so we build once and map the evidence to both.

ISO 27018 Certification in the Philippines — FAQs

Is ISO 27018 a standalone certificate?

No. Like ISO 27017, it is a code of practice certified as an extension of an ISO 27001 information security management system. The PII-processor controls are audited within the ISO 27001 audit and the resulting certificate references ISO 27018 — there is no accredited standalone ISO 27018 certificate.

Does ISO 27018 make us compliant with the Data Privacy Act?

No standard substitutes for legal compliance. The Data Privacy Act and NPC issuances bind you directly; what ISO 27018 provides is independently audited evidence that the organizational and technical measures the law expects actually exist and operate — strong support for compliance, not a replacement for it.

What is the difference between ISO 27018 and ISO 27701?

ISO 27018 is a control set for one situation: protecting PII you process in a public cloud. ISO 27701 is a full privacy information management system extending ISO 27001 across controller and processor roles, privacy risk assessment and data-subject rights. PII-heavy BPOs frequently implement both on one ISMS.

How long does ISO 27018 implementation take?

On an existing ISO 27001 ISMS, typically a few weeks to a few months depending on your cloud estate and PII volumes: gap assessment, control implementation, then a scope-extension or surveillance audit. Built together with ISO 27001 from scratch, plan three to five months for a single-site provider.
